Bambu Indah

Bali, Indonesia

Bambu Indah, translating to "beautiful bamboo" is the brainchild of jewelry designer John Hardy, who arrived in Bali in the 70s, and his wife Cynthia, whom he met there a decade later. This tranquil jungle retreat is located on the Sayan Ridge, above the Ayung River and across the rice paddies of Bongkasa capturing the essence of traditional Bali with modern regenerative practices. Harmonizing with nature through its homegrown food, groundwater, and solar energy, Bambu Indah offers an otherworldly experience that immerses guests in the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The lodge sits across from the Ayung River and overlooks rice fields, surrounded by a large eco-pool with the purest water and stones from the mountains. There are nine unique bamboo structures and a stunning Javanese bridal house, all decorated with artifacts from Southeast Asia. Each house is constructed using reclaimed teak wood and other locally sourced materials, reflecting a deep respect for nature and cultural heritage. The architecture emphasizes open, airy spaces that harmonize with the lush, tropical surroundings, allowing for natural ventilation and a seamless connection with the outdoors. Interiors are thoughtfully designed with handcrafted furniture, local textiles, and eco-friendly amenities, with no two rooms alike.

WILD INITIATIVES

John and Cynthia Hardy, the visionary owners of Bambu Indah, are leading the way in sustainable hospitality through their groundbreaking projects. At Bambu Indah, they have established a boutique hotel that seamlessly combines luxury with eco-friendly practices, demonstrating how hospitality can thrive in harmony with nature. Their dedication to sustainability extends to the Green School, an innovative educational institution they founded to inspire and educate future generations on sustainable living and environmental stewardship. Additionally, the Green Camp offers immersive experiences in sustainable agriculture and conservation, providing hands-on learning that highlights the importance of ecological balance. Through these initiatives, the Hardys are not only setting new standards in sustainable hospitality but also fostering a broader awareness and commitment to environmental responsibility.

Bambu Indah is built using locally sourced bamboo and reclaimed teak, which minimizes environmental impact and supports local craftsmanship. These materials not only blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings but also ensure the durability and aesthetic appeal of the structures, reflecting a deep respect for the environment. Water management at Bambu Indah is another cornerstone of its regenerative practices. The resort employs natural water filtration systems to maintain the purity of local water sources and reduce waste. This approach aligns with their broader commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring that the resort's operations do not harm the delicate ecosystem of Bali. The hotel also emphasizes organic farming and permaculture in its gardens, which supply fresh, locally grown food for guests. This practice reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transportation and supports local agriculture. Furthermore, the resort fosters a strong connection with the local community through fair trade practices and cultural exchanges, ensuring that the benefits of sustainable tourism are shared with the people of Bali.

Each bungalow, elevated three meters above ground to preserve the natural flow of the surrounding sand dunes, boasts its own private pool and embraces biophilic architecture principles, seamlessly integrating with the natural landscape. Designed with the elements in mind, specifically the wind, the bungalows are fully customizable to follow the natural air flow and light patterns. The hotel plans to unveil twenty new bungalows and twelve village houses in 2024. The expansion project will also include restaurants, shops, an art gallery, as well as a wellness hub, all designed with a community-driven approach and influenced by vernacular architecture that respects local customs and materials.

The hotel’s dedication to sustainability encompasses its infrastructure, with 100% permeable roads and a strict policy against introducing exotic species, preserving the region's native flora and fauna. Embracing a circular economy model, Fazenda Moreias prioritizes waste management and recycling, utilizing biodigesters to convert organic waste into compost that nourishes the land and safeguards groundwater. Additionally, the hotel invests in the local community, providing vocational training and supporting educational initiatives through the Moreias Institute, enriching the lives of over 70 local children while directing 1% of revenue towards the institute's operations.
