Why is the best room the room with a view? What is that feeling we get when we can see the unobstructed natural landscape out the window? What if we were much closer, wouldn’t that feeling be heightened? It is your environment and what you want from it that generates the feeling or the moment you wish to create. The internal and external connection that is always present but surfaced by your surroundings.
From the ancient rituals of forest bathing in Japan to the therapeutic qualities of coastal living, nature has always been a source of solace, inspiration, and rejuvenation for mankind. Our inner journey within natural elements opens a door to our senses and welcomes all the living things that surround us. You soon realize you are very much not alone but in a vast complex and reproductive, communicative ecosystem of breathing, talking and vibrant “beings” that are the plants, trees, mountains and seas. Maybe the answers to the unknown parts of our brain and conscience are much more closely tied to the natural landscape as our ancestors once described. Perhaps everything is and was right in our back yard shooting up to the sky and reaching deep below; curing ailments, feeding our souls and generously gifting us with nourishment, air, shelter, medicine and life.
Discover how the elements of nature can nurture both physical and mental health, offering a holistic approach to healing and revitalizing the body, mind, and soul. Join us on a journey to uncover the timeless wisdom that underscores the profound potential of land.
Imagine, you are running through the vast wilderness; your breath carries you as your mind stills and the world dissipates around you. You are connected to your body, feeling centered and present as you approach a dense forest along your path. You stop, take a deep breath, and absorb the vision before you. As you step into the lush, forested landscape, you feel the ground reconnect with the soles of your feet and the sensation of a balanced sacral energy overcomes you. An animal in the distance dances past you, and a hawk soars overhead. You are reminded that you are not alone and that you are one with your surroundings, truly immersed in the therapeutic embrace of nature’s landscape. The clean, crisp fresh air revives your body and mind and reconnects you with the knowledge that each organism is just as fertile and alive as you are. These lands in their entirety remind you that in nature, all is well, and as it should be.
Inner land masses rich with dense ancient forests, vast tundra, rolling plateaus, seemingly endless deserts, and ever-changing grassy plains, all evolved over millions of years. These sedimentary layers are the foundations that withhold the only known home to oxygen-breathing mammals in our known universe. Everything is set up in such a way that supports our survival, as our world orbits the sun at just the right distance.
It is no wonder that humans search for a place of natural solitude when dealing with illness or psychological stress. As it is not only psychological benefits that humans experience, but also physical, and cognitive benefits too. Scientific evidence even suggests that our visual and cognitive processing is strained in urban environments, and we must enter nature to experience restoration and an ability to replenish our cognitive resources. This results in better mental health, an increased attention span, and improved memory.
Exposure to nature has been linked to reduced inflammation and improved immune function. Phytocides, the compounds released by trees and plants, have been shown to boost the activity of white blood cells, enhancing our ability to fight off infections. The diverse array of microbes present in natural remote environments also contributes to the development and regulation of our immune system.
And so, it is not a coincidence that when you find yourself entrenched in these rich ecosystems, time seems to slow down, as does your heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. Your serotonin and endorphin levels rise as you refocus, contributing to an overall sense of well-being. Any tension stored in your muscles is released, as you become more receptive, responsive, and cooperative. A sense of awe washes over you, as does the natural desire to generously give back to the earth that gave rise to your very existence. And you once again feel as if you are a part of a much bigger whole.
Studies have constantly shown that people report a deeper sense of connection and restoration after visiting rural and coastal locations compared to spending time in urban green spaces. Thus, underlining the importance of accessing remote reserves and protected habitats, as they offer more significant benefits than areas with low diversity.
Whether it be in a lush jungle or rolling meadows, if it is deep within nature, and rich in biodiversity, you will find that your ability to tap into clarity of mind and purity of heart is enhanced. Whether it be through re-creation or recreation, it is in these therapeutic lands that we can reconnect to what came before us and truly heal. And it is not only the wellbeing of our natural environment, and the species within it, that benefit from our ability to reconnect to a much larger whole, but also humanity itself. Whether it be the oxygen that is released by the 250 ft tree, or the increase of red blood cells and antioxidants emitted from walking barefoot, it is the subconscious reliance upon these elements that resonate feelings of stability, generosity, and contentment.
This effect is one that can only come from the practice of what we call today as ‘grounding’. It is when you connect to the earth’s foundation, and the realization that its housed, and continues to house, every human that has ever lived, washes over you. Ultimately providing a deeply meditative and therapeutic connection to the roots of our existence.
It is in this state of being centered and grounded that we are nourished. As we take a pause from the expectations of our societal norms and enter the wild unexplored world around us. It is through the rediscovery of ourselves, while traveling to these protected remote lands, that we can reconnect to this more holistic way of being.
And, in fact, it is an old way of being. One that we have once forgotten and can now revive in a way that propels us forward in our evolution. For it is through the realization that nature is reciprocal, that we can lovingly give credence to our past, and try to move forward towards a harmonious existence for ourselves, humanity, and our ever-sustaining environment.
